Gate opener repair and new gate operators

Your gate hums, starts and stops, or reverses for no visible reason. Gate opener repair tracks down whether the fault is in the motor, control board, limit settings, power supply or a safety device telling the operator to stop. Often a dirty photo eye or damaged loop wire is to blame. If the gate itself sags or binds, the operator is straining against it, and gate repair comes first.

Newer residential operators are built to the UL 325 safety standard and will not run normally unless their required entrapment sensors are connected and working. That is good for safety but confusing when a sensor fails. The tech tests every device, adjusts force and limits, and sets up remotes and keypads so the gate and garage door can share one transmitter where the systems allow.

Gate opener services

From a dead operator to a new automatic gate, these are the jobs we take on.

Operator diagnosis and repair

Motors, gearboxes, control boards, capacitors, limit switches and batteries are tested in turn. Worn parts are replaced where the operator is worth repairing; if it is not, you hear that first.

Safety device repair

Photo eyes are cleaned, realigned or replaced, safety edges are tested for continuity, and wiring is checked back to the board so the operator recognizes each device.

Access controls

Keypads, remotes, intercoms and free-exit loop detectors are installed, programmed or replaced. The tech confirms each device opens the gate and nothing triggers it unintentionally.

New operator installation

Swing arm, articulated arm and sliding rack operators are sized to the gate's weight, length and use, then mounted, wired and set up with the safety devices the standard calls for.

Swing gate operators vs sliding gate operators

01

Swing gate operators

A linear or articulated arm pushes each leaf open and pulls it closed. They suit level or gently sloping driveways with room for the leaves to swing. A sagging leaf wears the arm quickly.

02

Sliding gate operators

A motor beside the opening drives a gear along a toothed rack on the gate. They suit short or uphill driveways where a swing leaf has no room, common on tight North Jersey lots.

Signs the gate opener needs service

Operators usually give warning signs before they stop completely. These are the ones worth acting on.

  • Gate stops and reverses partwayA safety sensor is blocked or misaligned, or force settings are off.
  • Operator hums but the gate does not moveFailed capacitor, stripped gear or a gate binding on its hinges.
  • Gate opens by itselfA damaged loop wire or stuck exit sensor; free-exit loops in the driveway are a common culprit.
  • Alarm beeping and operator locked outRepeated obstructions have tripped the entrapment alarm and it needs a reset.
  • Remote or keypad works only sometimesWeak receiver, interference or a failing keypad.

Safety first. Automatic gates move with enough force to seriously injure someone caught between the leaf and a post or wall. Never let children play near a powered gate or with its remotes, and never walk through a vehicle gate while it is moving. If a photo eye or edge has failed, do not jumper it to make the gate run; use the manual release until the device is fixed.

Why Carter for gate openers

Electrical and mechanical in one look

Operator faults often have a mechanical cause. The tech checks the gate's hinges or track as well as the electronics, so a new motor is not fitted to a gate that will wreck it.

Safety devices taken seriously

We test photo eyes, edges and the operator's built-in obstruction sensing, and explain where sensors belong on your gate. Bypassing them is not an option we offer.

Gate and garage access together

Remotes, keypads and intercoms can be set up so the gate and the garage door respond to the same devices, where the two systems are compatible.

We answer 24/7

FAQs

Gate Opener Repair & Installation FAQs

How do I open my automatic gate when the power is out?

Most operators have a manual release, often a key or lever on the housing, that disengages the motor so the gate can be pushed by hand. Its location varies by model, and some units have a battery backup for a limited number of cycles. Call us and we can talk you through it.

Why does my gate open and then won't close?

Usually a safety device is telling it not to. A photo eye that is dirty, misaligned or blocked by a plant, or a loop detector that thinks a car is present, will hold the gate open. A low battery or a limit setting can also cause it. Check the sensors first.

What is UL 325 and does it apply to my gate?

UL 325 is the safety standard for gate and door operators. For automatic gates it calls for entrapment protection, typically the operator's own obstruction sensing plus external devices such as photo eyes or contact edges, which current operators monitor. Older systems may not meet today's requirements; we will tell you if yours falls short.

Can you add an opener to my existing manual gate?

Often, if the gate is solid, level and moves freely by hand. The tech checks its weight, length, hinges or track and the mounting post. A gate needing repair should be fixed first; sometimes a new gate built for automation is the better choice.

Do you also repair garage door openers?

Yes. The same company handles garage door opener repair, so if both entrances are acting up, mention it when you call. Both operators can be checked on one visit, along with the remotes that run them.
