Doors and gates together

One call for both

Plenty of New Jersey homes have a garage door and a gate between the car and the street, and either one can trap the car. Carter works on both: torsion springs, cables and openers on the door side, hinges, rollers and gate operators on the gate side, so you aren't coordinating two companies.

Tight properties shape the job. Shallow garages, shared alleys and steep Palisades driveways affect which new door, opener or gate will actually fit. The tech measures, explains the trade-offs and lets you pick.

Why Carter

Built for New Jersey weather doors and gates

Salt, freezing nights and wind off the Hudson are hard on springs, rollers, seals and gate motors. We work towns from Bergen County to Middlesex County, answer the phone 24/7, and explain the cause before recommending any repair.

How it works

Three steps from call to fixed

  1. 01

    Call and describe the problem

Describe the symptom, any noise you noticed and your town. A photo or short video by text helps the tech bring the likely parts.

  2. 02

    We look and explain

On site, the tech finds the actual cause, shows you what wore out or broke, and lays out the repair options so you can choose.

  3. 03

    Fix it and test it

Once you approve, the work gets done, then the door or gate is cycled, balanced and safety-tested while you watch.

Repair or replace

Fix it or start fresh?

A broken spring, frayed cable or worn roller on a solid door is a repair. Those parts wear out on schedule, and swapping them restores the door without touching the panels or tracks.

Replacement starts to make sense when panels are cracked, rusted through or badly dented, when the door is uninsulated and the garage doubles as living space, or when parts for an older door or gate are no longer made. We'll say which side of that line your door falls on.

Keep it running through winter

What wears out and why

A garage door is a balanced system. Springs carry the weight, cables transfer it, rollers guide it, and the opener only steers. When one part tires, the others take the strain.

Cold makes lubricant thick and metal stiff, so noisy rollers and tired springs show up first in January. Road salt tracked into the garage corrodes bottom brackets and gate hinges. A yearly check catches worn parts early and keeps the auto-reverse and photo eyes working.

FAQ

Common questions

Short answers to what people ask before they book a visit.

Talk to a technicianOpen 24/7Mon–Sun, Open 24 hours(201) 645-7407See all questions →
Do you work on driveway gates as well as garage doors?

Yes. Swing and sliding driveway gates, pedestrian entry gates and the operators that move them are a regular part of the work, alongside overhead garage doors. If both the door and the gate act up, mention it on the call and one visit can cover the pair.

What hours can I reach you?

Someone picks up around the clock, every day of the week, including holidays. Call when the problem shows up; we'll talk through the symptoms and set up a visit at a time that works for you.

My door got very heavy all of a sudden. What happened?

Most often a torsion spring has broken. Springs carry nearly all of the door's weight, so once one snaps, the opener and your arms are lifting the full load. Check the coil on the bar over the opening; a split coil confirms it. Leave the door down and see our spring service page.

Is it worth repairing an old opener?

Sometimes. A worn gear, a bad sensor or a failed logic board can often be fixed. If the unit has no photo-eye safety system, the motor is failing, or parts are hard to source, a new opener usually makes more sense. The tech will lay out both paths.

Which towns do you cover?

Towns in eight counties: Hudson (Jersey City, Hoboken, Bayonne and the rest), Bergen (Hackensack, Paramus, Fort Lee, Wyckoff, Oakland), Passaic (Paterson, Clifton), Essex (Newark), Morris (Morristown, Parsippany, Whippany), Somerset (Basking Ridge), Union (Elizabeth, Summit, Plainfield) and Middlesex (New Brunswick, Perth Amboy). Nearby and not listed? Call and ask.

Can you fit a garage door into a garage with low headroom?

Often, yes. Older garages in towns like Hoboken, Jersey City and Elizabeth tend to have little space above the opening. Low-headroom track kits, a rear-mounted torsion setup or a wall-mount opener can make a standard overhead door fit. We measure first and tell you which options will work before you order anything.
